You're a Publisher, who deserves more respect; It's Interesting to read, not just another e-mailing, but something of value!
4.) It produces Income from Ads. A new means of revenue; money coming to you for advertising, Yet there's no typesetting, paste-up or printing costs!
What Kind of a Newsletter?
The field is wide open. It can cover your Hobby; Your interest; It can assist a special group of people; It can address a political view; It can try to help others, in many different ways. Just find a need, then offer YOUR Newsletter as the "answer" to that need!
How do you Promote Your Newsletter?
You must "spread the word" about your Newsletter, or you won't have any subscribers or advertisers. Here's how I do it,.. 1.) Posting to Newsgroups. I post messages to various Newsgroups; Ones that I believe will be read by prospective subscribers. I get New Subscribers nearly every day! In the past two weeks, 77 people Subscribed! 2.) Placing ads. I advertise in OTHER Newsletters. The people who receive ANOTHER Newsletter might be a subscriber to MY Newsletter! I Offer a "Free Subscription" .. I check with the Publishers of those other Newsletters, to be sure it's o.k., because they might not like another Newsletter Publisher pulling away their subscribers! 3.) Make use of "Free Ad" Sites. I have a list of 40 locations on the Internet where I can place Free Ads! I usually place a short 4 line ad about my Newsletter; To what kind of reader it is addressed; that it's free to subscribe; what's in each issue & then my e-mail address! That ad pulls in responses; requests for sample copies & Subscription orders!
4.) Doing e-mailings. Many times an e-mail will arrive that has a "list of e-mail addresses" at the top,.. those are names I can e-mail my newsletter to; Every e-mail I get is from someone who might become a subscriber for mine; Every advertiser in OTHER Newsletters might be future Advertisers in mine! So, I send my Newsletter to every e-mail address I can get my hands on!
What about Articles for the Newsletter?
It would help if YOU can write articles, about How to make money at home, or over the Internet; How to Get Free Web pages; How to get Free Advertising; etc. You can come up with other topics that might be of interest to your subscribers. An e-mail Newsletter SHOULD have some reading matter, not just ads.
If you personally can NOT write articles, you'll need to locate writers who can send you articles to be published in your Newsletter. You help the writer, by giving him the free printing & circulation of his article with his e-mail address; Your readers benefit from his writing, making your Newsletter more interesting and readable, which also fills a space and "meets a need" in your newsletter, benefiting you, too! Everyone benefits!
Putting it all together
With an Electronic Newsletter, there is no "page layout" to be done; There's no printing on paper; there is no glue or wax involved; it's all text and it's all inside your computer; in your word processor, and within your e-mail program!
I receive ads from advertisers. I copy and save their ads in a file for my next issue,.. When it's time to start putting my newsletter together, I open up my standard "Newsletter Format", put in a new date and issue number; find a place for their ad & import their text into position. I do the same with articles that writers send me; I paste them in, with contributions from readers; important e-mails I received; other tips; valuable websites I hear about, etc. It all goes in to "fill up my Newsletter."
I can enter about 527 lines of text into my A.O.L. e-mail message box. (Or I can send my Newsletter as a "file attachment.") I can create it of- line and when I'm ready, import it into an e-mail message box and it's ready to be e-mailed to my list of subscribers!
Doing the E-mailing
The nice thing about my Subscriber list, I don't have to print out labels; Buy envelopes; Glue the names on, or peel-and-stick the labels on the envelopes, etc. I just import the names into the "TO" box of a blank e-mail message; type in "HomeMoney #14" in the SUBJECT line, Import a copy of my Newsletter into the MESSAGE box and hit "SEND!"
I do that 15 or 20 times, and I'm done! I don't have to handle any physical paper or envelopes or labels! It's all done electronically! Readers don't need to look through paper pages; or worry about the number of trees that were cut down to allow me to Print and mail my Newsletter! It's so easy, I've done the layout within an hour; done the up-dating of the subscriber list within an hour, and e-mailed to my entire list within an hour! 3 hours work & another issue is out!
Maintaining my Subscriber Names
My current subscriber list is broken down into segments of 35 each - separations are made at about 35 names per single mailings. When I get a new subscriber, I add in their e-mail address, alphabetically, according to the first letter in their address. This eliminates duplicates, since all names are" in order", I can immediately see if there are TWO names the same. We've been growing at about 50 or 60 every two weeks; 25 or 30 every week; 7-8 new subscribers every day!
Occasionally I get people who send me their request to be removed, for any number of reasons. I save all those to a file, and when I'm ready to up-date the list, import the additions and corrections in, and add in the new ones where they go, alphabetically, and delete the ones that need to be removed. About 20 names per month go bad; people have moved,quit their on-line activities; forgot to let me know; left no new address, so those have to be taken off the list. As I say, it takes about an hour to keep the list up-to-date.
Money from Advertisers
Since NO MONEY goes out for postage; paper ; printing or envelopes, where does the money go? Into my pocket! The advertisers money,.. goes directly into my pocket! It's nearly 100% pure profit! The only expense is my monthly on-line fee (about $25.00 per month, currently.) There are simply NO COSTS involved. I don't have to hire anyone to do the work, I can do it in one evening and send them all out before I turn off my computer and go to bed!
I figure it's worth about $3.00 per line of 70 characters & spaces per line,.. One (3-line) ad costs an advertiser $9.00, to have his 3 line ad in one issue. Like I say, with no money having to be spent on materials, the money that comes in goes right into my pocket. I do the work, so those advertising dollars pay me for my time & effort.
In Conclusion
A regularly issued Newsletter, electronically distributed, is very easy to do and can be very profitable! If you're already connected to the Internet, through your computer & modem, and through a Service Provider like America On Line or Compuserve, you probably already have what you need to "Become a Publisher!" The e-mail program provided by your Provider is probably sufficient to do the job. If I can do it with just a small Macintosh with 4 megs. and no special software program, I'm sure YOU can do it with what you have!
